Busted by a 2 year old

So every year since we have had kids, we have done a Halloween theme.  The first 2 years were easy, only one kid and he was little so he did n’t really care what he was.  Navi’s first Halloween he was a monster, and the second a football player.

Then Princess came along, but things were still pretty simple.  Navi was 3 that Halloween and she was only a few months old, so no one argued.  They were the Tortoise and the Hare.HalloweenThe following year it was Monsters inc ( Mike and Scully)

Rockstar was now born.  Then things got  a little harder.  Navi had opinions, and so did Princess, but I was still able to steer the boat, and we ended up with Aladdin, Jasmin, and Abu.

abu, alladinThe year of Littles Birth I was actually in the hospital on Halloween, and she was in a white onesie with a bow on her head, at only a day old.  But the older ones still went trick or treating with Aba and Auntie Lala.  They were Captain Hook, Tinkerbell, and Peter Pan.

Still a perfect trio, and in theme. and then our year of super heros went by without a hitch, Batman, wonder woman, super man, and super penguin to the rescue! batman,costume,Colorado,2007,halloween.wonder woman,Colorado,costume,halloween,2007.

Then last year happened, and it took some finageling and discussions to get everyone set on a costume, but in the end it all worked out and we had a perfectly themed quartet. A knight in shining armor, a fire breathing dragon, and 2 pretty princesses.Photobucket

By this year the kids realized we had a theme thing going on ( I think) and when they came to me with their costume requests last week, the first thing I said was ” we haven’t discussed a theme”  To which I was told “I’m going to be a Vampire”  ”I want to be a Mummy” and ” I am going to be a witch and Littles is going to be a black cat” ” a kitty cat!!!”  well, great, they worked it out themselves, and the theme was classic Halloween, which was fine by me.  Then they got into the specifics of their costumes which is where the discussions began.  Rockstar told me as a vampire he had to have 2 swords.  vampires don’t have swords, they have teeth, I explained, and keep explaining.  Princess’s witch costume needs to have a large pointy hat that stands up (doesn’t tip over), a black and purple gown with spiders and spider webs on it, and glitter, and go down to her ankles.

Aba suggested I buy the costumes, since at 6 months pregnant he doesn’t think I can handle making 4 costumes along with everything else.  I told him that no, I was going to make them.  That was until I searched online, went through tons of pattern books, and found nothing really to my liking, so I searched Wal-mart and found nothing there either.  Then today while I was up in Syracuse I made a wholehearted look for what I would need to appease all my little ones requests.  I searched Target, gymboree, Disney store, pottery barn kids, toys r us and the gap.  Then I headed to the Halloween shop.  I walked in with a mission.  To leave with the costumes my children requested, or the basics that I could tweak to make them pass.  I grabbed the vampire teeth off the wall, and since Littles was with me I started with her.  She found a cat that she liked ( a leopard, not a black cat but was pleased.  She didn’t like the black one) and off I went to look for princesses witch, when all of a sudden I am told “I wanna be a pwincess!” What where did this come from?  Her costume was in the basket, she was done, but that was before she saw the array of costume choices before her, before she saw the light up crown and wand! ” No you wanted to be a cat.  See we have your costume right here”  as I show her the costume put in the basket mere seconds before.  ” No, I don’ wan’ dat!” as she grabs it out of the basket and puts it back on the shelf and shoves the crown and wand in the basket.  Ok, deep breath.  ” Littles let’s get everyone elses costume then we will get yours”.  i find a little vampire fairly quickly, I ponder over the 15 different witch costumes looking for one that meets Princesses specifications, and find one that with a little bit of work will be just fine, I search and search for a mummy to no avail only to be told it is not carried in the store, but their may be one online.  Would I like a zombie instead???  No.  Then I go back to looking with littles.  Taking her back to the cat costume, showing her all the other cat options, finally asking ” do you want to be a cat with a crown???  and am empatheticly told ” I wanna be a princess”. Sigh.  Okay, child, I am tired, it has been a long day, i just want to start on the hour and a half car ride home ( it is 7:30pm.  we left the house at 7 this morning).  What kind of princess do you want to be?  I ask.  Totally giving in.  My cohesive Halloween’s now a memory of the past.  ” a fairy princess”   Great.  I scan the choices.  She pulls out a scarlet o’hara type dress meant for a 16 year old.  I quickly explain it’s to big and take her back to the toddler sizes.  I scan the 3 fairy princess options in her size and grab the pink one, “How about this one?” “Okay!” happily she shoves it in the now overflowing basket, and smiles, then notices something.  she pulls her wand she selected earlier out of the basket, runs to a distant wall, puts it back and grabs another.  She returned with the new wand and we head to the check out counter.   This one she carries herself.  It is better, because it to is pink.

I knew eventually that themed Halloween would end.  I had hoped to pull it off a few more years at least, but I had never expected a 2 year old to be the end of it.  I always figured it would be a stand off with one of the older ones that didn’t want to conform, or wanted to wear what their friends were wearing, or something like that.  But apparently I was to be ousted by an over tired, amped up 2 year old on a shopping binge.

  1. This is actually paintsmh but wordpress won’t let me leave a comment as myself. Anyways my friend has two kids, 4 and 2, and she had the same problem in a way. Try convincing a little girl with one brother and all male cousins that she really shouldn’t go as a foot ball player. I was VERY glad to not have to hear that conversation :)

  2. Hello there, Happy Hallowen!!!
