Microwave popcorn

I am not a big fan of microwave popcorn, it tastes well, artificial to me.  I grew up eating popcorn made the old fashioned way  you know, in a pot with oil on the stove top, then with drizzled butter and popcorn salt sprinkled on top.  But sometimes I feel I am in a rush and the kids love to have popcorn, so I found myself falling back on the microwave version and found homestyle which was better, but still left a nasty taste in the mouth.  And then I finally figured it out.  How to make microwave popcorn taste good.  Simple, make it from scratch!!!

So easy (and way cheaper than 3 bags for $5)  start with  brown paper bag, pour in 1 TBSP (or so) of Olive oil in the bag (yes I know it looks like it will leak, just work fast!!!)  then pour in some popcorn seeds (home grown, from a bottle of Orville – whatever floats your boat) fold down the top of the bag twice (small folds people, small folds) toss in the microwave and set for 3 minutes.  When the popping slows pull the bag out (sometimes this will be after 2 minutes – experiment to be sure).  Then pour into a bowl toss the bag and enjoy!!!  No pan to wash and no nasty artificial colors, flavors, or after tastes!!!  Go ahead and add salt and butter, powdered cheese, cayenne pepper what ever floats your boat!**

Yummy Yummy

** Okay, so Alton Brown on Good Eats may have inspired me, or had a show on how to do this, or something like that, But it is still good advice, right???

  1. Cool, thanks for the tip! I’ve been buying the SmartBalance microwave popcorn and it’s pretty good.
I remember the air/blower popcorn maker thingy when I was a kid, and you slide the pat of butter in the little drawer to melt while the corn is popping.

  2. This has got to be the coolest trick I have ever read!

I too remember the “air popper”… Great memories, but empty flavor to go with those empty calories… Now this I gotta try… Mmmm… Real popcorn…

  3. does not work i had popcorn everywhere in my microwave

  4. maybe you did not fold the bag down on the top tight enough or you put to much popcorn in. I have never had that problem.
